Overview - SES MUSIC EDUCATION
“Music is a more potent instrument for education than any other.” - Plato
We teach many things through music – not just rhythms, note values and names, singing steps and skips, styles and eras, but other subjects as well. Students will learn these things in the classroom, exploring physical coordination through movements, geography when we learn songs from other parts of the world, history when we sing about the westward expansion or US presidents to self-esteem, literature, math and social studies.
The goal of the music program at SES is to empower the children’s self-esteem, social identity and sense of shared humanity. We want them to engage in music actively, not passively – by doing not just listening or observing. When children sing or play an instrument in a group setting they become engaged in the music through a performer perspective. They are more likely to be engaged in a personally meaningful “real life” musical practice; they are performing the knowledge through singing or playing with varying degrees of skill and understanding.
Here are other facts based on research from Stanford University. Children who participate in arts are:
· Four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
· Three times more likely to be elected to class office
· Four times more likely to participate in a math and science fair
· Three times more likely to win an award for school attendance
· Four times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem.
· Participate in youth groups nearly four times as frequently.
· Perform community service nearly twice as often.
· Read for pleasure nearly twice as often.
SES is focused on implementing a performance approach for your child.
Whether through voice, guitar or band instrument, we will help your child comprehend concepts and use their instrument expressively within the musical repertoire. The administration has been diligently working on formulating a schedule to provide these opportunities to your child.
Class Rules and Discipline Policy
Remember the Golden Rule:
Matthew 7:12
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
Luke 6:31
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
1. Enter the room quietly with a positive attitude.
2. Encourage one another – be supportive even when someone didn’t do it correctly.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.
3. Play instruments only when invited to perform. Misuse of instruments will result in losing the privilege to play on that day.
Middle school and Junior High students who disrupt the class will receive a consequence according to the discipline plan.
General Class rules:
Follow directions.
Bring your materials to class.
Keep hands, feet, objects and unkind remarks to yourself.
Raise your hand to speak.
Have a good attitude.
